Kahlyn’s Scholarship Recipients


The Kahlyn E. Heine Memorial Scholarships were established by friends and family of Kahlyn following her death in 2012. Funds raised are invested in the Douglas County 4-H Foundation and the Douglas County Community Foundation. Both are recognized 501(c)3 organizations. The scholarships are funded from investment earnings, ensuring the scholarships can continue to be given annually.  In 2021, a $1,750 scholarship was given at Lawrence High School and $1,000 in scholarships were given to Douglas County 4-H members. 

The following students received scholarships from investment funds at the Douglas County 4-H Foundation:

2021 – rowan plinsky, a graduate of lawrence high school, attending washburn university, majoring in education, & Lakyn Roehrich-putthoff, a graduate of Free State high school, attending kansas state university, majoring in agriculture education

2020 – Garrett Hart, a graduate of lawrence high school, attending baker university, majoring in accounting

2019 – lucy summers, a graduate of tonganoxie high school, attending the university kansas, majoring in Speech Language Hearing

2018 – rowan plinsky, a 2017 graduate of lawrence high school, attending washburn university, majoring in journalism or education

2017 – rowan plinsky, a 2017 graduate of lawrence high school, attending washburn university, majoring in journalism or education

2016 – Katie Patrick, a 2013 graduate of Baldwin High School, attending  Emporia State University, majoring in Elementary Education

2015 – Gunther Wehrman, a 2015 graduate of Baldwin High School, attending the University of Kansas, majoring in Pharmacy

2014 – Garrett Jones, a 2009 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School, attending the University of Kansas, majoring in Music Education

2013 – Katie Patrick, a 2013 graduate of Baldwin High School, attending  Emporia State University, majoring in Elementary Education

First consideration for this scholarship will be a student who is majoring in education with preference given to those pursuing an emphasis in Special Education. Next consideration will be a student who is majoring in another field that will impact the lives of children. The recipient should have demonstrated commitment to leadership, citizenship, and community service.

2015 – Christian Espinosa,  the University of Kansas, majoring in Elementary Education

2014 – Grethen Heirl the University of Kansas, majoring in secondary education

2013 – Kelsey Consolver, the University of Kansas, majoring in education

Applicants for this scholarship must have demonstrated a commitment to leadership, citizenship and community service.  Recipients must show proof of enrollment in post-secondary education.  An essay is required for consideration.  The essay should discuss how your leadership and community service roles at school and in your community have prepared you for post-high school education.
